Fractal4D: First Release
Check out this temporary page for Fractal4D updates!
—————————–
Here is the first public release of Fractal4D. It is still beta, but there is a built-in auto updater that will make sure you have all the necessary updates without having to check for announcements. The auto-updater does not affect any files or directories outside of its own application directory. This is an AIR app, so you will need Adobe AIR to use it. Please leave feedback, comments, and suggestions.
OR
Download F4D
Donate to help make Fractal4D better!
Notes:
- It defaults to exporting an illustrator script. If you want to save an image, you must uncheck “Export to Illustrator” in the Options menu.
- Version 1.22 is going through changes with easing methods. The only one that exports exactly for illustrator is linear. The others are undergoing changes. Sorry.
- Better documentation and cleaner menus are coming!
If you find any bugs let me know. I am going to fix the ones that exist and you will all be updated automatically when this happens. I wanted to get this out before Thanksgiving and there is substantial to play with and get familiar with before these bugs will affect you. I will also be adding an additional hotkey to simulate a mouse click to start/stop your lines.
More to come! View the other posts to see some demo videos.

there is an error when i try to import a exported f4d script in illustrator cs4.
i found this in the script: “var lineList = [ ]];”
i replaced it with “var lineList = [ ];”
now i dont get an error but nothing shows up on my illustrator document
November 29th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
@Jonas.
It sounds like you are trying to export an empty recording. This is caused when you accidentally start recording, but do not draw any lines. Right now, it just creates a recording where nothing happens. When you export this, it seems to cause an error because there are no points to follow.
I have noted this and this should not be an issue soon enough. I will make it so that if you do not draw anything, a recording will not be saved.
Thanks for the heads up!
November 29th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
@Jonas
Updated. Changes made to recording area and exporting to illustrator. There should be fewer problems and more user awareness of what is happening. Keep your updater on and you’ll have this update automatically. If not, turn it on for the time being to grab it!
November 30th, 2008 at 5:44 am
ah thanks matt! it works!
the problem was i didn’t hit record at all. i thought i just have to draw the fractal an then hit the save button to export it.
maybe you could implement some kind of warning when you’re about to export an empty sketch so the people know they have to hit record first.
great application dude, can’t believe how little feedback you got here. you should submit this to some flash and (graphic)design blogs!
November 30th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Matt Im trying to import to AI and I can see the .jsx file but wont load to cs3 any suggestions?
why not record the session and then have the option to be imported to After Effects.-
Thanks for sharing

@Jonas
After the update, it should give you an error saying “Nothing found to record” if you haven’t created anything while recording. It won’t let you save an empty recording either, so this error shouldn’t show up again.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m spreading it around slowly.
November 30th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
@Gerardo
Recording is actually pretty intensive and requires a lot of space. I’m going to be implementing some space saving techniques quietly that will just lower file size and such, but right now it is intensive.
Are you getting any errors when trying to import the JSX? When you press the Play icon in F4D, that is the recording you will be getting in your JSX file. If nothing plays while in the app, it will not be exporting anything.
I have not looked into any AE importing but I feel like it will be a LOT more involved. This isn’t to say I can’t/won’t do it in the future, but it will take time.

Head on over and download this program (Adobe AIR required) and start creating. Best of all, your only required to move your mouse around the screen and click to start and stop paths. [...]

Hi guys,
To install the program all you need is RENAME the file. By doing these you will CHANGE the file extension from .zip >> to .air.
Fractal4DFinal.air.zip to Fractal4DFinal.air
You will notice the icon changed to Air file.
Then just double click to install the file.
Enjoy !!
